1. Pilih yang mana, universitas/sekolah swasta atau negeri?

Coba anda ajukan pertanyaan ini kepada orang Indonesia, pasti mereka akan langsung menjawab “jelas negeri!”. Di Indonesia, sekolah swasta umumnya tidak terlalu terkenal, kecuali jika memang punya nama besar seperti Bali International School atau sejenisnya yang memiliki prestasi tingkat tinggi. Umumnya orang Indonesia lebih memilih sekolah negeri karena biaya lebih murah. Begitu juga dengan orang Amerika. Sekolah negeri atau public schools di sana memang dibiayai sepenuhnya oleh pemerintah negara bagian yang bersangkutan. Namun, ketika menyangkut kualitas, umumnya sekolah swasta di Indonesia memiliki sedikit masalah dengan kualitas. Persepsi bahwa sekolah swasta memiliki mutu yang kurang daripada sekolah negeri menyebabkan sekolah negeri kebanjiran peminat. Lain halnya dengan di Amerika. Meskipun biayanya lebih mahal, sekolah swasta dilirik oleh orang mampu karena sekolah swasta atauprivate schools umumnya memiliki image borjuis dan elite. Soal mutu, mungkin ada perbedaan sedikit, tapi tidak terlalu signifikan.

2. Yang mana duluan, teori atau praktek?

Sistem pendidikan di Indonesia terlalu menekankan pada teori. Semuanya berdasarkan teori. Memang sekolah mempunyai lab, namun jarang digunakan. Siswa-siswa SD diajarkan materi yang jauh melebihi kemampuan nalarnya. Secara akademis, mereka bagus. Namun, begitu disuruh melakukan praktek, mereka kelabakan. Seperti sebuah adegan dari film 3 Idiots, hanya Rancho yang mempraktekkan air garam sebagai elektrolit dengan cara menyetrum seniornya yang kencing di depan pintunya dengan sebuah sendok.Semua orang tahu kalau air garam adalah elektrolit, tapi tidak semua orang bisa mempraktekkan kegunaannya.

Orang Amerika berbeda lagi. Mereka memiliki rasa ingin tahu dan sikap ilmiah yang cukup tinggi. Sistem pendidikan berbasis pada learning by doing atau “belajar dengan cara melakukan”. Jika anda berkunjung ke sekolah Amerika, biasanya pada pelajaran sains, lab pasti ramai. Selain itu, di beberapa sekolah, terdapat kewajiban kerja amal. Ini melatih soft skill siswa untuk hidup di masyarakat. Sebagai perbandingan, dalam kurikulum Amerika tidak dikenal adanya “Pendidikan Agama” ataupun “Budi Pekerti” atau “Pendidikan Anti-Korupsi”. Tapi apakah itu berarti mereka tidak punya moral dan akhlak? SALAH BESAR! Di Indonesia, kita hanya mempelajari teori Budi Pekerti, bukan mempraktekkan, sedang orang Amerika sudah belajar etika dari masyarakat sejak kecil.

3. Konsumerisme

Orang Indonesia cenderung ikut-ikutan. Entah itu trend handphone, memakai kawat gigi, bermobil, dan sejenisnya. Hal itu menyebabkan tingkat konsumsi Indonesia akan barang luar sangat besar. Apalagi penyebabnya kalau bukan iklan-iklan tidak bermutu di media massa dan tekanan teman-teman (peer group). Remaja-remaja membuang-buang uang untuk membeli BlackBerry, berbondong-bondong ke ahli gigi untuk memasang kawat gigi yang membuat penampilan mereka semakin hancur saja, dan merengek kepada orang tua agar dibelikan mobil. Bahkan para orang tua pun memiliki konsumsi yang cukup besar, apalagi yang tinggal di daerah metropolitan macam Jakarta.

Sebenarnya orang Amerika tidak terlalu berbeda, tapi mereka mempunyai konsep yang jelas tentang keuangan mereka. Dengan bantuan financial advisor, perencanaan keuangan menjadi mudah. Ditambah dengan asuransi, maka mereka tidak perlu khawatir apabila mobil mereka tiba-tiba hancur. Tapi yang terlihat jelas berbeda adalah kemampuan remaja Amerika dalam mencari uang sedari remaja. Tidaklah aneh melihat mahasiswa bekerja di sebagai kasir convinience store atau busboy di McDonalds untuk mencari tambahan uang jajan. Intinya, mereka lebih tahu cara menggunakan uang.

4. Apakah jalan hidupmu hanya satu, atau banyak?

Sistem pendidikan Indonesia memiliki ciri khas, yaitu sistem penjurusan sedari SMA yaitu IPA dan IPS. Dan celakanya, pamor jurusan IPA lebih baik daripada IPS. Hal ini membuat seolah-olah jalan hidup dibagi menjadi 2, yaitu mau jadi orang IPA atau IPS. Tapi tetap saja, sistem pendidikan Indonesia tidak menghargai siswa itu sendiri karena sistem ini. Siswa adalah sebuah wildcard, seorang Novice yang belum memperoleh Job dan mengalokasikan Skill Point. Dengan adanya penjurusan, maka sekolah mematikan hak siswa untuk memilih apa yang disenangi.

Di Amerika, siswa diberi kebebasan memilih mata pelajaran apapun yang ia sukai. Selain menyenangkan, sistem itu membuatnya lebih cepat mengenali kemampuannya sendiri. Hal ini sesuai denga pandangan liberal bangsa Amerika

Manfaat Kopi

Menurut Harvard Women’s Health, konsumsi kopi beberapa cangkir sehari dapat mengurangi risikodiabetes tipe 2, pembentukan batu ginjal, kanker usus besar, penyakit parkinson, kerusakan fungsi hati (sirosis), penyakit jantung serta menghambat penurunan daya kognitif otak.

• Diabetes. Dua puluh studi yang dilakukan di seluruh dunia menunjukkan bahwa kopi mengurangi risiko diabetes tipe 2 hingga 50%. Para peneliti menduga penyebabnya adalah asam klorogenik di dalam kopi berperan memperlambat penyerapan gula dalam pencernaan. Asam klorogenik juga merangsang pembentukan GLP-1, zat kimia yang meningkatkan insulin (hormon yang mengatur penyerapan gula ke dalam sel-sel). Zat lain dalam kopi yaitu trigonelin (pro vitamin B3) juga diduga membantu memperlambat penyerapan glukosa.
• Kanker. Riset secara konsisten menunjukkan bahwa kopi mengurangi risiko kanker hati,kanker payudara dan kanker usus besar.
• Sirosis. Kopi melindungi hati dari sirosis, terutama sirosis karena kecanduan alkohol.
• Penyakit Parkinson. Para peminum kopi memiliki risiko terkena Parkinson setengah lebih rendah dibanding mereka yang tidak minum kopi.
• Penyakit jantung dan stroke. Konsumsi kopi tidak meningkatkan risiko jantung dan stroke. Sebaliknya, kopi justru sedikit mengurangi risiko stoke. Sebuah studi atas lebih dari 83.000 wanita berusia lebih dari 24 tahun menunjukkan mereka yang minum dua sampai tiga cangkir kopi sehari memiliki risiko terkena stroke 19% lebih rendah dibandingkan mereka yang tidak minum kopi. Studi terhadap sejumlah pria di Finlandia menunjukkan hasil yang sama.
• Fungsi kognitif. Studi atas 4.197 wanita dan 2.820 pria di Perancis menunjukkan bahwa meminum setidaknya tiga cangkir kopi sehari dapat menghambat penurunan fungsi kognitif otak akibat penuaan hingga 33 persen pada wanita. Namun, manfaat yang sama tidak ditemukan pada pria. Hal ini mungkin karena wanita lebih peka terhadap kafein.

Efek Negatif Kopi

Namun demikian, kopi juga memiliki efek negatif. Kafein sebagai kandungan utama kopi bersifat stimulan yang mencandu. Kafein mempengaruhi sistem kardiovaskuler seperti peningkatan detak jantung dan tekanan darah. Dampak negatif itu muncul bila Anda mengkonsumsinya secara berlebihan.

Bagi kebanyakan orang, minum dua sampai tiga cangkir kopi tidak memberikan dampak negatif. Meminum kopi dengan frekuensi lebih dari itu bisa menimbulkan jantung berdebar-debar, sulit tidur, kepala pusing dan gangguan lainnya.
